The Happy Cafe

Problem Statement

Create a bold, secure CBD digital storefront with seamless inventory management and age verification to stand out in a crowded market.

We teamed up with two entrepreneurs who decided to jump into the legal cannabis space and create brother and sister online stores to sell CBD products.  This birthed The Happy Cafe (THC) and Royal Vibes Cannabis.

Given the number of products that would be sold and the desire to have an easy to use distribution and inventory system, we chose the Shopify platform.  Many of the features on the site were custom-built Shopify widgets, instead of using pre-built ones.

We elected to look for imagery that was a bit grittier and bolder than other sites we have designed.  Our intent was to fit in with the clients’ foray into this burgeoning industry.

With every e-commerce (digital storefront) site, there is a payment processor.  We were requested to vet several companies that were licensed to work with companies that sold cannabis, so that there were no federal issues with the exchange of money. As a result, we recommended their chose third-party payment processor that helped to protect them from issues with payments.

The most important part of the site was security.  Beyond the normal security of protecting the flow of information and money, there was the ability to access the site.  We had to ensure that the site was not accessible by minors and adults under 21 years of age, because the legal age limit is 21+.  After several iterations, we were able to find a vendor that provided an interface to scan and examine ID cards to validate the identity of the user.  This ensured that the client was not distributing products to minors.
